Bucks County architect Thomas S. Michener, Jr. was born in Philadelphia, the son of Rest Cope and Thomas S. Michener (Sr.), and graduated from the George School in 1928 before studying architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, where he completed a B. Arch. in 1933.
Along with fellow Quaker Robert F. Bishop, Michener was one of the founders in 1939 of Bryn Gweled, a cooperative homestead community in Bucks County, PA, where he, like Bishop, designed houses and made his residence. Michener's professional career was spent at the U. S. Department of Agriculture's Eastern Regional Research Laboratory in Wyndmoor, PA. There, Michener's duties encompassed architectural engineering and oversight of the integration of building services with agricultural research. In the 1960s, he was made acting superintendent of building services at the lab. He retired in 1976.
