Born: c. 1762, Died: 1831 Irish-born James Hoban would achieve prominence in the new United States for his design of the White House (President's House) in Washington, DC. He had emigrated to American in 1785 and was in Charleston, SC, by 1790. In 1792 he stopped in Philadelphia before traveling to Washington, DC. In addition to the White House, Hoban designed the John Mason Residence and the War Department Building in Washington, DC. He was Superintendent Architect of the Capitol from 1793 to 1802.
