Born: 5/13/1873, Died: 7/17/1955 Herbert J. Wetherill was born in Philadelphia, the son of William H. and Elizabeth P. Wetherill. After an early education in the Philadelphia public schools, Wetherill spent nearly a year and a half at the University of Pennsylvania in its architectural course and gained office experience in the firms of Cope & Stewardson, the Wilson Brothers, Walter Smedley, and Boyden & Taylor. In October, 1899 he opened his own office in the Witherspoon Building and remained in operation at least through 1921. Although Wetherill's practice was primarily residential, he did design alterations to St. Mary's Protestant Episcopal Church at 39th & Locust Streets (1912).Wetherill was a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and of its Philadelphia Chapter. He participated in both the Spanish American War and World War I and was a member of the Society of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the Sons of the Revolution, as well as the St. Andrew's Society, the Philadelphia Skating Club, and the Humane Society.
