Partner in the illustrious New York firm Carrère & Hastings, John Merven Carrère was educated at the Ecole de Beaux-Arts in Paris and then moved to New York, where he worked for McKim, Mead & White. By 1888 he and Thomas Hastings had established what would become one of the premier offices specializing in Beaux-Arts classicism in the United States.
