Born in Concord, MA, to Sally Mercer, by the 1830s Isaac Melvin established a carpentry and architectural practice in Lexington, MA, where he partnered with Isaiah B. Young. In 1841 he moved to Cambridge, MA, remaining there through 1852, when he decided to relocate to California. This proved to be an unfortunate choice on his part because he became ill on the ship to California and died soon after reaching San Francisco.
Isaac Melvin is credited with the design of a number of churches, public buildings, and residences in both Lexington and Cambridge, MA.
