Rollin C. Chapin was born in Minneapolis, MN, to Harold C. and Virginia E. (Coe) Chapin. After public school education in Minnesota, Chapin enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania in architecture, graduating in 1912. There followed a period of work in various offices: Harry W. Jones (1908-10); Tyrie & Chapman (1913-14); McKim, Mead & White; Thomas G. Holyoke; Hewitt & Brown (1915-17); the Construction Division of the U.S. Army (1917-19); and Frederick M. Mann (1919-20). In 1920 he opened his own office.
