The master builder John Smith, Jr. should not be confused with John Smith, son of Robert Smith. John Smith, Jr. was elected to The Carpenters' Company in 1796 and died in 1820. He was a subscriber to Owen Biddle, The Young Carpenter's Assistant (Philadelphia, 1805), one of the earliest books of architecture written and published in America.
