Born in Chapel Hill Station, Brookline, MA, Joseph Daniels Leland graduated from Harvard University and then pursued his architectural studies athe Ecole des Beaux Arts, in the Atelior Chifflot. Upon his return to Boston he began work with the firm of Peabody & Stearns (1910-1913) and then entered the partnership of Loring & Leland, which flourished from 1913 to 1919. In 1919 he organized J. D. Leland & Company (fl. 1919-1935) and later Leland & Larsen (organized 1935). In 1937 he served as Chief Architect for the Old Harbor Village Housing Project.
Leland joined the AIA in 1919 and was awarded Fellowship status in 1943.
