By 1857 the Gibson firm is listed in Philadelphia city directories as a "glass staining and decorative establishment", located at 79 South 11th Street. In McElroy's Business Directory for Philadelphia in 1860 they appear as "Glass Stainers and Enamelers." From information published by the St. Andrew's Society, it appears that younger brother George Hastie Gibson, who had specifically trained as a stained glass artist in England, led the firm while John Gibson concentrated on decorative painting.
