Born in Chester, PA to Fredericka Emily and Albert George Lorenz, Frederick R. Lorenz attended Chester High School and Philadelphia's Central High School, from which he graduated in 1912. In 1916, he enrolled in the architecture course at the University of Pennsylvania's Towne School. He completed a certificate of proficiency there in 1920 after serving as a sergeant with an engineering unit in World War I (1917-1919).
Lorenz's career began in the office of Ritter & Shay, for whom he worked from 1922 until 1932. Lorenz then worked for Howell Lewis Shay from 1935, holding the position of senior architect after 1944. He remained with the successor firm, Howell Lewis Shay & Associates until his retirement, which presumably occurred at the dissolution of the firm in 1967.
Lorenz was a member of the national AIA, of the Philadelphia Chapter and of the Pennsylvania Society of Architects. He was an active member of the T-Square Club in the 1930s, serving as its treasurer.
