Dominique Berninger was born in Schiltigheim, Alsace, France to Jules G. Berninger, an architect, and Cecile Krafft Berninger. He graduated from Ludwig's Oberrealschule in Darmstadt, Germany, in 1917, and attended the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in Paris in 1919-20. After emigrating to the Unites States in 1923, Berninger found work in the Boston firm of Stone & Webster. He remained there until 1925, when he came to Philadelphia. From the time of his arrival until 1932, Berninger worked in the office of Zantzinger, Borie & Medary, although probably not continuously. In the early 1930s, Berninger also worked in partnership with several other architects and on his own, presumably finding work as he could in the Depression. In 1932, he and Louis I. Kahn, who was also in the Zantzinger office in the period, founded the Architectural Research Group, a loose association of young architects who shared an interest in the progressive social thinking and International Style details that Berninger had experienced first hand in his European training. Berninger also worked in partnership with Harold Carswell and John A. Bower (Sr.) under the name Carswell, Berninger & Bower from about 1930 until 1935, when Carswell left the partnership. Berninger & Bower continued until 1945. In 1946, Berninger formed a partnership with Paul d'Entremont; they were joined soon after by G. Harold Haag, who had been a draftsman in Berninger & Bower, to form the firm of Berninger, Haag & d'Entremont. Berninger died in late 1949 while undergoing surgery for lung cancer. The name of the firm was changed to Haag & d'Entremont in 1950 to reflect his decease.
