Wife of prominent Philadelphia architect W. Pope Barney, Marian Green Barney came to Philadelphia from the midwest and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1913 to 1915. Her role in her husband's firm has not been defined exactly, but in the 1920s she participated in the annual T-Square Club exhibitions. In 1922 her name appears as the designer for the Carl H. Chaffee residence in Swarthmore, PA and in 1925 and 1927 for the garden of the house which she and her husband maintained in Rose Valley, PA. In 1932 she is listed on her husband's office stationery as responsible for "residence and garden design."
