Born: 4/1/1870, Died: c. 1936 In his training Adin B. Lacey represents the path that many of Philadelphia's nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century student architects traveled. Instead of enrolling at the University of Pennsylvania, Lacey, who was born in Philadelphia, the son of Alfred C. and Edwina B. Lacey, sought practical training in architecture in the firm of Cope & Stewardson, where he remained from April 1887 to January 1898. While engaged in office work, Lacey also attended courses in freehand drawing and modeling at Spring Garden Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art. In addition, Lacey was active in the T-Square Club competitions, which would have introduced him to Beaux-Arts style rendering.In 1898 Lacey opened his own office at 1026 Chestnut Street; and although he would engage in brief associations with other architects (William C. Hays, Alexander Mackie Adams, and Louis Rush), his was primarily an individual practice and one which concentrated on residential design. Lacey became a member of the AIA in 1901 and was active in the T-Square Club, whose atelier he had attended. He had joined the T-Square Club in 1889 and had his architectural drawins sent to Chicago for exhibition in the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. In 1895 Lacey served as secretary of the organization, was elected vice-president in 1898 and president on 2 May 1900. He also held membership in the Architectural League of America and edited an important compilation of early twentieth-century American competition designs (1907).
