Frederick R. Shenk was born in Reading, PA, and attended Cornell University (1918-1921) before finishing his B. Arch at the University of Pennsylvania (1921-1923). After working as a draftsman for Stearns & Woodnutt in Philadelphia, he returned to Reading and entered the prosperous Wyomissing, PA, office of Muhlenberg Bros. in 1923, gaining partnership status in 1930 and remaining with the firm until 1965. In that year he and another Muhlenberg partner, Lee V. Seibert established their own office as successors to to Muhlenberg Bros.
