Born: 7/15/1872, Died: 11/16/1926

George C. Baum was born in York, PA, and educated at the North Broad Street Select School for Young Men and Boys (Broad Street and Fairmount Avenue, Philadelphia) before enrolling at Gettysburg College, where he graduated in 1893. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania, receiving his B.S. in Architecture there in 1896. Baum's university career was distinguished by several awards in the Beaux-Arts style competitions held at the University of Pennsylvania, and his thesis design was "Un Ecole des Beaux Arts."

Baum first appears in the Philadelphia city directories as a student in 1896; but by 1897 he is listed as a draftsman, with offices at the same address as Edwin F. Durang, one of the most prolific Catholic church architects in the Delaware Valley. If indeed he apprenticed with Durang, he learned the art of church design well since his independent work later shows a preponderance of Lutheran church projects.

By 1902 Baum had launched his own firm; and, except for a hiatus from 1906 to 1908, he remains in the Philadelphia city directories through 1926 when he died. In addition to his office in Philadelphia, Baum in 1909 and 1910 maintained an office in Pittsburgh, where he chaired the building committee for the Carnegie Institute Extension. Following Baum's death, office work was completed by two designers in his firm Edwin A. Early and L. DeForest Emmert, who used the partnership title Early & Emmert.
