Elisha Safford was born in Edwardsville, IL, the son of Mabel Fulton and the Reverend Elisha Safford, and attended Lafayette College before enrolling in the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a B.Arch. in 1935. In 1947 Safford joined the firm of Carroll, Grisdale & Van Alen, and eventually rose to the position of senior associate. Safford was named a partner in the successor firm, J. Roy Carroll Jr. & Partners, formed in 1973.
Safford joined the national AIA in 1967 and was a member of the Philadelphia Chapter as well as the Pennsylvania Society of Architects.
