Edgar G. Cross II was born in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Mary Herder and Walter D. Cross. He graduated from Upper Darby High School before earning a B.Arch. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1943. He won the Charles Merrick Gay Prize in Construction his final year, and was a member of the Architectural Society.
After graduation, Cross served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during the closing years of World War II. He founded his own firm in Huntingdon Valley, PA in 1951. He also worked as the chief designer for the Thayer Co., probably before this point. In 1963, he joined George M. Ewing Co. as a project architect, but had worked as in their specifications department prior to then. Cross also later worked for Vincent G. Kling & Associates and the Vaughn Organization.
Cross joined the national AIA in 1960; he was a member of Bucks County Chapter. He chaired the AIA's Membership Committee, 1960-1961. Cross was a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania in 1946-1948 and 1950-1951.
