Richard S. Montgomery entered the University of Pennsylvania with the Class of 1928 and eventually earned his degree in architecture at the University in 1941, while he was working for G. Edwin Brumbaugh. Like Brumbaugh, he was interested in historic preservation and was involved in saving the Philadelphia Exchange Building, according to his obituary.
He retired from active practice in 1966.
