Born: 12/26/1888, Died: 5/7/1957 Housing specialist, John Graham, Jr., was born in Camden, NJ, the son of John and Florence (Bede) Graham. After attending Norfolk Academy in Norfolk, VA, and graduating from Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia in 1911, he entered the University of Pennsylvania, where he attained his B.S. in Architecture in 1911. From 1911 to 1913 he worked for Duhring, Okie & Ziegler and from 1913 to 1916 for Day & Klauder. Although he launched a brief independent practice in 1916, this was soon interrupted by World War I; and Graham became Captain of Army Engineers from 1917 to 1919. Upon his return to the States, he joined Thomas, Martin, Kirkpatrick & Graham for two years, but then moved to Folsom, Stanton & Graham in 1921. This relationship lasted until approximately 1929, and 1930 found him back in individual practice. By 1938 Graham had moved to Washington, DC, to join the staff of the U.S. Housing Authority as project planner for new public housing in the District of Columbia, Wilmington, DE, and Baltimore, MD. During World War II Graham continued his interest in housing by serving as technical advisor in defense and war housing, but he retired from public service in 1945 to return to private practice. At the time of his death in Falls Church, VA, he was associated with Arlington, VA, architect James M. McHugh.Graham had made several trips abroad since his first in 1909, and in 1936 he traveled specifically to Scandinavia to study housing forms. This trip culminated in his Housing in Scandinavia (1940). Graham was a member of the AIA and was co-chairing its Committee on the National Capital at the time of his death. He also belonged to the T-Square Club, the Philadelphia Cricket Club, the University of Pennsylvania Architectural Society, and the Franklin Institute while residing in Pennsylvania.
