Frederick J. Amweg enters the Philadelphia city directories as an architect in 1880, but thereafter he appears chiefly as a civil engineer or contractor. From 1889 to 1891 he is associated with R. C. Ballinger & Co., contractors and builders. On the cover of Gopsill's 1893 Philadelphia city directory, Amweg advertises himself as engineer, contractor and builder, and he appears to remain in independent practice until 1898, when he is listed as a member of the firm of Holt, Schober & Co.

In 1897 Amweg accused school architect Joseph Austin of accepting bribes in connection with the award of contracts for the annex to Central High School; however, these charges were not supported by other evidence; and the proceedings were dismissed.
