Born in Cleveland, OH, Paul A. Bartholomew received a B.S. from Gettysburg College in 1905 and a B.S. in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania in 1909. Between 1909 and 1912 Bartholomew worked in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh architectural offices as a draftsman. In 1912, he opened his own office in Greensburg, PA, and in 1920, formed a partnership with Brandon Smith. Bartholomew & Smith continued until 1927. In the late 1920s, he worked partnership with William Kirchenbower, who had been employed by Bartholomew & Smith. Bartholomew maintained architectural offices in both Pittsburgh and Greensburg until 1933. By 1956, William A. Roach, David P. Moyer, and Herbert S. Walfish had joined him as partners in the Greensburg firm of Bartholomew, Roach, Moyer & Walfish. Bartholomew retired before 1970.

Bartholomew joined the national AIA in 1921, and was a member of the Pittsburgh Chapter, of which he was named a life member and elected to emeritus status upon his retirement.
