John D. deMoll, son of architect Carl deMoll and painter Mary Hitchner deMoll and brother of architect Louis deMoll, was born in Philadelphia and raised in Swarthmore, PA. John deMoll entered Cornell University before World War II, and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war he returned to Cornell to complete a B. Arch. in 1946. That year he joined his father's firm, the Ballinger Co. in Philadelphia. DeMoll and his brother were later made partners in the business. John deMoll was made president of the company in 1965, and in 1986, the brothers sold their interest in the company. DeMoll retired to Key Largo, FL that year, but continued to work as a consultant and designer and as a member of the American Arbitration Association.
