Born: 3/18/1883, Died: 10/1953

William Henry Gravell was born in Philadelphia to William and Adelaide Vogel Gravell. He attended Central High School (1901) and the University of Pennnsylvania (C.E., 1906). After graduation he associated with the Pittsburgh Testing Laboratores and served as engineer for Filbert Paving and Construction (until 1 January 1909). He then established an independent firm in civil engineering. Who's Who in Philadelphia (c. 1927) lists among his most notable works the Penn Athletic Club, Franklin Field Stadium at the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Charter School, and the Detroit Institute of Art.

He is often associated with Arthur W. Hall, his partner in Gravell & Hall from about 1924 to 1926. However, his career was longer and more varied than this short partnership indicates. Gravell appears in the Philadelphia city directories from 1911 to 1913 as a civil engineer; then he lists himself with architects Franklin & Co. in 1915 only before returning to his civil engineer occupational listing. Through 1927 he continues as a civil engineer although the Philadelphia Real Estate Record and Builders Guide notes his partnership with Hall. By 1927 Gravell states that he serves as president for William H. Gravell, Inc., and he remains with that designation through 1930, only listing himself as a consulting engineer in the 1935/36 directory. In the 1934 Book of the School, published by the University of Pennsylvania, Gravell's listing includes a partnership in Gravell & Duncan, with Chester Duncan; however, city directory listings indicate that Duncan was part of the William H. Gravell, Inc.

He was a founding member of the Penn Athletic Club.
