Born: 3/16/1898, Died: 12/22/1965 William H. Livingston was born in Philadelphia, the son of William Clement Livingston and Lillian (Dampman) Livingston. After graduating from West Philadelphia High School in 1915, he entered the University of Pennsylvania, subsequently gaining his B.S. in Architecture in 1919, and gathering both the Stewardson Scholarship (1918) and the Arthur Spayd Brooke Award, as well as medals from the Beaux Arts Institute of Design. During his student days Livingston acquired office experience with Zantzinger, Borie & Medary (1916-1918), but after graduation he joined Paul P. Cret's firm and later became a part in that office (1923), along with John F. Harbeson, William J. H. Hough, and Roy F. Larson. While in the Cret firm he was involved in the design of the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, the Detroit Institute of Arts, an dthe National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD. Following Cret's death in 1945, the younger partners succeeded him with Harbeson, Hough, Livingston & Larson, later known as H2L2.Livingston joined the AIA in 1929 and received fellowship status in 1945. He also served as president of the Architects Building Corporation in Philadelphia, charged with the development of the professional tower on South 17th Street which still houses architectural offices.
