George O. Wilkinson was born in Baltimore, the son of Lucille Odend'hal and George W. Wilkinson, who was in the funeral monument business. The younger Wilkinson graduated from Loyola High School in that city, and attended both day and evening classes at the Maryland Institute College of Art, earning a diploma there in 1940. Wilkinson then studied architecture at the School of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania in the class of 1945, but did not complete his degree. While still in school, Wilkinson worked for his father's firm as a draftsman, designer, salesman, and truck driver. He also worked for an unidentified monument business in Philadelphia before leaving Penn around 1943.
After leaving Penn, Wilkinson went to New York City, where he began his professional career. He worked for a year each with four architectural firms in the late 1940s: Delano & Aldrich, William Lescaze, Jordan McLaughlin, and finally Walker & Poor. He then returned to Philadelphia and joined the office of George M. Ewing, where he remained for five years, rising to the position of project architect. His future partner Hughes Cauffman was chief designer in that same office during part of the period Wilkinson worked there. In 1954, Wilkinson and Cauffman formed Francis, Cauffmann & Wilkinson with James B. Francis. The following year, they joined with Heyward Pepper to form Francis, Cauffmann, Wilkinson & Pepper. Wilkinson joined the national AIA in 1961. In 1964, the firm opened a second office in Hazleton, PA with Wilkinson as the partner in charge.
Wilkinson was the president of the Historical Architectural Review Board for Plymouth-Whitemarsh township in Montgomery County, PA, near where he made his home in Conshohocken.
