Born in New York to Dr. William B. and Frances (Fisher) Wood, Eric Fisher Wood earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Yale University in 1910, at the same time gaining an A.B. in Engineering and Economics. He followed this with continued work at Columbia University (1910-11), studying architectural engineering. Rounding off his architectural education were two years spent in France at the Ecole des Beaux Arts (1913-14). In New York he associated as a draftsman with several of the best-known firms of the time, including Welles Bosworth (summers 1909-10), Cass Gilbert (1922-13), and Warren & Wetmore. Just prior to leaving for France Wood became head draftsman for Griffin & Wynkoop (1912-13).
World War I interruped Wood's architectural career, and he would actually serve during that conflict and during War War II, rising from Private to Brigadeer General in rank. He retired from the military as a Major General.
By 1920 Wood was a partner in the Pittsburgh office of Rutan & Russell, actually making it Rutan, Russell & Wood. However, this relationship lasted only two years; and from 1922 to 1937 he associated often with Henry Hornbostel, while at the same time operating his own office, Eric Fisher Wood & Co. Among the drawings conserved at the Architecture Archives, Carnegie Mellon University, can be found documents for the German Evangelical Portestant Church, Pittsburgh (1925), Grand Building (1928), and Westinghouse Memorial (1930), all in Pittsburgh and all representing the collaboration of Hornbostel and Wood.
During the time of his collaboration with Hornbostel, Wood was also occasionally involved with Philadelphia work, associating with architects Ritter & Shay on the Francis Drake Hotel (1929), for example.
Wood joined the AIA in 1922. He was an author of several books on military matters.
