Born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, to theatre architect J. B. McElfatrick, William H. McElfatrick was trained in his father's office. In 1871, following the fire in Chicago, he moved to Chicago and joined the firm of W. W. Boyington. By the 1880s, however, he had returned to his father and was working in the New York office of J. B. McElfatrick & Son. Following his father's death in 1906, William H. McElfatrick continued working in New York, only moving the office to Brooklyn and maintaining the specialty in theatres.
