Born in Philadelphia, PA, Carl C. Gerlach studied architecture at the Drexel Institute of Technology, graduating in 1912. He also apprenticed with Walter Smedley from 1912 until 1916. Gerlach joined the office of John T. Windrim as a draftsman in 1921, remaining there until 1923. Between 1927 and 1929 he drafted for Simon & Simon and then was squad leader for Arthur Dore, 1929-1930.
His other experience included: Designer & Draftsman, Reading RR Co, 1930-1931; Special Design & Research, Philadelphia Gas Works, 1931-1933; Design & Plan, then Architect & Assistant Project Head, City Planning Commission, 1933-1934 & 1936-1937; Draftsman & Designer, Ballinger Co, Geo S. Idell, Gleeson & Malrooney, W. H. Lee & Ralph Bencker, 1937-1939; Designer, Engineering Department, E.I. Dupont de Nemours & Co, 1940-1945; Draftsman & Designer, Carson & Carson, Day & Zimmerman, 1945-1947; Associate Architect, Morten Keast, 1947-1951; Member, General Industrialists Inc, 1952-1954; Architect, Haag & D'Entremont, 1954; Architect, Reliable Engineering Corp, 1955.
Joined national AIA, 1945; member of Philadelphia Chapter.
