Born in Glassboro, NJ, to Henry and Wilhelmina Faltermayer, Carl H. Faltermayer attended public schools in Philadelphia, graduating from Northeast High School in 1922. He then obtained his academic training in architecture by attending Drexel Institute's Evening School from 1920 to 1921, followed by night classes at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art from 1922 to 1925. To round out his Beaux-Arts training Faltermayer also attended the T-Square Club atelier for three years. Throughout this training period, he was already working for church architect Charles Bolton, with whom he remained from 1921 to 1928. In 1928 he became "squad boss" for John T. Windrim and stayed with that large firm from 1928 to 1932, with a brief alliance with Simon & Simon from 1928-29. Alhough the Depression slowed his office work, by 1935 he was engaged in the office of Edmund Krimmel (May through October, 1935), and there followed a long series of engagements with several architects: Davis & Dunlap (1935-1936); Simon & Simon (1936-1937); Karcher & Smith (1938-1939); his own practice (1939-1940); Walter Carlson (1940-1941); the Hercules Powder Company (1941-1945); George W. Ewing (1945-1949); Vincent Kling (1949-).
Faltermayer joined the AIA in 1946 and was also a member of the Philadelphia Chapter. In his youth he was active in the T-Square Club, especially with its atelier, and later also belonged to the Society of Architectural Historians, as well as several organizations associated with Haddonfield, NJ, his residence for many years.
