Born in Yeadon, PA, and a graduate of Lansdowne High School, Henry Davis, III, worked for the Bureau of Architecture of the Methodist Episcopal Church from 1920 to 1931, actually beginning his apprenticeship there before he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1928. After leaving the Bureau, Davis launched a long period of work for other architects both in and out of Philadelphia. These included: Walter H. Thomas; Paul Monaghan; Karcher & Smith; George Ewing; Albert Kahn, Inc., of Detroit; the United Aircraft Corporation; and back in Philadelphia, William H. Lee and R. Brognard Okie. He formally established his own firm in 1937.
Davis also maintained a lively interest in archaeology and provided the illustrations for volume one of E. A. Speiser's report of the University of Pennsylvania excavations at Tepe Gawra (1935).
