Born in Philadelphia, the son of G. J. Cauffman. Attended Episcopal Academy.

B. Arch. with honors, University of Pennsylvania, 1940. Frank Miles Day Memorial Prize, 1937-8; Arthur Spayd Brooke Memorial Prize, Bronze Medal, 1939-40; Samuel Huckel Jr. Architectural Prize, First Prize, 1939-1940.

U.S. Navy, Lieutenant Commander, 1941-1945.

Draftsman: Harbeson, Hough, Livingston & Larson, 1947-9.

Project Architect: Willing, Sims & Talbutt, 1951-2

Chief Designer: George M. Ewing, 1952-4.

Formed Francis, Cauffman & Wilkinson, 1954 with James B. Francis and George O. Wilkinson. Joined Heyward M. Pepper to form Francis, Cauffman, Wilkinson & Pepper, 1955.

National AIA membership, 1960.

Board of directors, Philadelphia Chapter, AIA, 1967-8. U.S. Olympic Team, 1948. Member, Radnor Township Civic Council, 1968 ff.; Radnor Township Open Space Committee, 1968 ff.; Radnor Township Design Council, 1966 ff.
