New York architects Carrere & Hastings contributed a number of buildings to the Philadelphia area and also trained several Philadelphia architects, including Walter Karcher. Like the influential office of McKim, Mead & White, Carrere & Hastings exemplified Beaux-Arts principles of design; they participated in a number of competitions for public buildings and are perhaps most recognized for their design for the New York Public Library. Like other members of the Architectural League of New York, Carrere & Hastings presented their designs for exhibition in the annual T-Square Club/Philadelphia Chapter AIA events.
