This partnership succeeds the office of Thomas, Martin & Kirkpatrick, which dissolved around 1931 when Donald M. Kirkpatrick returned to Europe to study etching. Following his secession from the office, Walter H. Thomas and Sydney E. Martin continued in practice until the older Thomas retired in 1941.
Responding to the change in the market for architecture in Philadelphia during this time, Thomas & Martin designed public housing.
