Born:
5/7/1920,
Died:
11/20/1962
Son of prominent Philadelphia architect Howell Lewis Shay, William Dixon Shay followed in his father and older brother's footsteps by gaining degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in 1942 and 1943. He also appears to have shared his father's talents in watercolor rendering and design because he won several first and second Beaux Arts Medals during his undergraduate career and the Chandler medals for 1942 and 1943. During the summers of 1938 and 1939 he worked as an office boy for his father and became a draftsman in the office in summers from 1940 to 1942. After graduation in 1943 he joined the firm fulltime; and when Howell Lewis Shay & Assocs. was organized in 1948, he was made partner.
From 1944 to 1945 Shay returned to the University of Pennsylvania in the role of design critic, teaching the Grades C and D design. In 1946 he became a member of the Philadelphia Chapter, AIA, and in 1961 he presented a paper on campus planning at the 6th Biennial Workshop Clinic of the Eastern Association of College and University Officers. This paper was printed and distributed nationally by the Association.
Following Shay's death in a plane crash, the Independence Garden at the Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge, PA, was dedicated as a memorial to him.
