Born in Chicago and educated at the University of Pennsylvania (Bachelors of Architecture, 1934), Alfred N. Richards pursued a career away from Philadelphia, but returned in the 1950s. From 1945 to 1948 he worked as job captain and assistant project manager for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and then became porject manager for Golemon and Rolfe in Houston, TX (1948-1951), but in 1951 he returned to Philadelphia, working for Baader, Young & Schultze (1951-1952 and 1954 to around 1960). In the interval when he was away from the Baader, Young & Schultze office, he entered the Pedersen & Richards partnership (1952-1954). By 1960 Richards had moved on to Howell Lewis Shay & Assocs..
