Ivan Clarke Bachman (Jr.) was born in Philadelphia, the son of Louise Adams and Ivan C. Bachman. He graduated from Upper Darby High School and enrolled in the School of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania at the beginning of World War II. He served as a sergeant in the U. S. Marine Corps between 1944 and 1946, and returned to complete a B.Arch. at Penn in 1949.
During most of his career, Bachman was employed by Carroll, Grisdale & Van Alen; he joined the firm in 1951 and was made a partner in its successor J. Roy Carroll & Partners before he left the Philadelphia area around 1976. Between 1978 and 1980 he worked in the Denver, CO, firm of Rogers, Nagel, Langhart Architects and then for Morris Kemper & Associates in the same city between 1980 and his retirement in 1990.
Bachman joined the national AIA in 1970, and was a member of the Philadelphia Chapter.
