Although Ellery K. Taylor spent roughly 25 years (ca. 1915-1940) working for Charles Z. Klauder, he also maintained an outside practice of his own. Taylor was born in Chicago, the son of Isaac H. and Georgina (Flanders) Taylor. He received his early education in the Ithaca, NY, public schools and graduated from Haddonfield High School in New Jersey in 1906. As an undergraduate Taylor was employed by the Westinghouse Company in Pittsburgh (1904-05) and by Ballinger & Perrot (1906-1909). He earned his B.S. in Architecture in 1910 from the University of Pennsylvania, worked for John T. Windrim from 1910 to 1915 and then was engaged by Day & Klauder from 1918 and again from 1922 to 1926. Subsequently he worked with Klauder from 1927 at least through 1936. While in Klauder's office he was chiefly involved with the design of academic buildings, contributing to buildings at Yale, the University of Pennsylvania, Wellesley, University of Delaware, Pennsylvania State University, Cornell University, University of Pittsburgh, University of Chicago, University of Colorado, Concordia, Princeton University, and Staunton Military Academy (Virginia). From 1920 to 1922 he attempted a private practice and at the time of his death was employed by the Jack Steele Company. During the 1930s Taylor designed a number of projects in Haddonfield, NJ, where he resided, and in 1936 he noted that he had for ten years acted as a consulting specification writer.

An avid genealogist, Taylor published a study of the Flanders family and a genealogical table charting the descendants of Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts. He also served as secretary for both the T-Square Club and the Philadelphia Chapter, AIA (1916/17).
