Born: 1/4/1859, Died: 4/6/1930 Although Edward Hurst Brown began as a successful architect, his career changed so that he became a writer on architectural topics rather than a practicing architect. He was born in Philadelphia to Philip Sidney and Natalie Josepha (Wescott) Brown. Following graduation from the University of Pennsylvania in 1879, Brown became a draftsman with Wilson Bros. & Co., a position which lasted until 1881, when he began to work as a draftsman for the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad. He spent 1883 as an assistant engineer for maintenance for the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. at Altoona, but by 1883, he had also launched his own firm in which he was joined in 1886 by Samuel Hall Day. When Brown & Day dissolved in 1891, Brown became the advertising manager for Harrison Bros. & Co., a local paint firm.This launched his career in another direction, not only in the paint industry, but also as an author. By 1893 Brown was editor of the periodical Painting and Decorating; and when that editorial office moved from Philadelphia to New York City, he moved along with it. 1898 found him in the general advertising business in New York, but he retained his Philadelphia ties by writing articles for the Ladies' Home Journal, which then included several articles per issue on architecture or interior design. He also worked as special department editor for Painters' Magazine, also based in New York City. At the time of his death, he was residing in Mt. Carmel (Hamden), CT. Brown was a member of the national AlA, and had become a member of the Philadelphia Chapter in 1888. While at the University, he also belonged to the Franklin Scientific Society.
