Joseph A. Di Palma was born in Philadelphia and trained at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a B. Arch. in 1952. In the 1950s, he was employed in a number of Philadelphia architectural offices, working as a designer for Harold Wagoner, a designer and draftsman for Harry Sternfeld, and a draftsman for Howell Lewis Shay. In 1961, he and Charles A. Crass (who had also worked in Wagoner's office) formed Di Palma & Crass in the city; the firm continued until 1964, when the partners each founded their own office, with Di Palma moving his practice to Cherry Hill, NJ. Di Palma joined the national AIA in 1956, and was a member of the Philadelphia Chapter until his move to southern New Jersey, when he joined the West Jersey Chapter, serving on its membership committee in 1968. Di Palma was also a member of the American Society of Church Architects, serving on its board of directors from 1962 to 1964, and as treasurer between 1964 and 1967.
