The master builder William Stevenson, Sr., was elected to the Friendship Carpenters' Company on the eve of the Revolution. He joined The Carpenters' Company when the two organizations of master carpenters united in 1786. In 1789 he inventoried the tools of the house carpenter John Barker; that same year he was elected Warden of The Company. In 1811 he became a city Surveyor, and in 1816 he was elected Vice-President of the Carpenters' Company and President the following year.
