Designer of the German Society Building on Spring Garden Street in Philadelphia, William Gette was born in Bad Freienwalde, Germany and was naturalized as a U. S. citizen in 1880. For the German Society building, Gette competed against several architects of German origin in the city, including Oscar Frottcher, Paul Brandner, and G. Knoche.

Like many other German architects in Philadelphia, Gette found much of his work among the German community in the area. Thus his most successful patrons included J. F. Betz and Louis Bergdoll, both owners of large brewing companies.
