Little is known of William J. McAuley, co-author with W. Davenport Goforth of Old Colonial Architectural Details In and Around Philadelphia (1890) and designer of the 1902/03 alterations to Glen Foerd estate in the Torresdale neighborhood of Philadelphia. McAuley is noted as a draftsman in the Philadelphia city directories as early as 1884, and he worked for Rankin & Kellogg in 1892 on the design of the Pennsylvania State Asylum for the Chronically Insane. By 1894 independent projects appear for him in the Philadelphia Real Estate Record and Builders Guide, and by 1902 his office operation has been expanded to William J. McAuley & Co.
