Born in Wilmington, DE, Walter Carlson maintained an architectural practice in that city as well. He attended Drexel Institute's Evening School from 1909 to 1910 and worked as a draftsman for Walter Stewart Brown before becoming a draftsman for the Dupont Company in Delaware. In 1927 he organized his own firm.
Carlson joined the AIA in 1932 and achieved fellowship status in 1952.
