Established after the death of John Wellborn Root in 1891, Daniel H. Burnham & Co. represented the talents and energy of Daniel H. Burnham of Chicago. Two Philadelphia buildings (John Wanamaker Department Store, 1909; Land Title Building, 1897-1898) illustrate the massive construction that the Burnham office often used. Union Station in Pittsburgh also represents ties to the City Beautiful movement with which Burnham was so closely associated. The office continued in operation for a short while after Burnham's death in 1912, finishing the Butler Brothers Warehouse in Chicago in 1913.
