Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, Alexander Milne Calder emigrated to the United States in 1868 and soon achieved a prominent position as a sculptor in Philadelphia, where he designed the sculptural web which covers Philadelphia's City Hall. His son Alexander Stirling Calder and grandson Alexander "Sandy" Calder would continue the Calder tradition in sculpture.
