W. Edward Pierce was born in Philadelphia to William H. and Louisa (Toplis) Pierce. He began his career with Appleton & Burrell as an apprentice carpenter and rose to full-fledged carpenter. From 1917 to 1919 he worked with Warren Moore. In April, 1919 he partnered with Daniel Henon in the Pierce Henon Co. of builders. On 1 January 1923 (according to Who's Who in Philadelphia) Pierce bought out Henon's interest. Daniel Henon then joined his brother Paul in Hoffman-Henon Co., and Pierce became sole owner of the firm.
