Son of church architect C. Grant La Farge, and grandson to stained glass artist John La Farge, Christopher Grant La Farge, Jr., graduated from Groton School in 1916 and then gained an A.B. from Harvard University in 1920 before continuing on to the B.S. in Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania in 1923. Although he eventually worked in his father's office, he began with McKim, Mead & White in New York and then worked with Ware & Clark. By 1932 he had resolved to give up architecture in favor of writing.
