Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Alvin Newton and Lucy Kendall (Davis) Bugbeel, Newton A. K. Bugbee attended high school in Templeton, MA, and began his engineering career with Edge Moor Bridge Works in 1896. From 1898 to 1900 he worked for Pottsville Bridge Company, and from 1900 to 1902 he was employed by the American Bridge Company. In 1902 he launched his own structural steel engineering firm in Trenton, NJ.
