Uncle to the more famous John McArthur, Jr., John McArthur was a master builder in Philadelphia. According to the sparse biographical information found, he was born in Oban, Scotland, and emigrated to the United States when he was 30 years old. His nephew, who came to live with John at the age of 10, went on to design Philadelphia's City Hall.
