Born: 6/1/1886, Died: 8/15/1952 Born in Baltimore, MD, theater architect John J. Zink graduated from the Maryland Institute in 1904. Thereafter he apprenticed with William H. Hodges and Wyatt & Nolting before associating with New York-based Thomas W. Lamb on the Hippodrome and Garden Theatres in Baltimore as well as the Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown, MD. During his association with Lamb, Zink studied architecture at Columbia University in the evening. After working with Lamb, Zink developed relationships in Baltimore with Ewald G. Blanke and W. O. Sparklin, with whom he associated in 1920. Subsequently, he developed an illustrious career in theatre design, chiefly in the Middle Atlantic states. His firm Zink, Atkins and Craycroft reputedly designed over 200 movie theaters in cities along the Eastern Seaboard, including some 30 in the Baltimore-Washington region.Zink joined the AIA in 1921 and was awarded a second place in the Harding Inaugural Court of Honor Competition, 1920.
